LIMA, OH (WLIO) - From a Santa drop to a gingerbread escape, who knew teaching science could be so fun?

Thanks to the help of Lima Senior students, Independence Elementary participated in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) day filled with activities involving gravity and building, to the transformation of energy. Perhaps the favorite experiment was turning a potato into a battery to demonstrate a transfer from chemical to electrical energy. The hands-on experiments spark curiosity in students and show that science is all around us.

"When their toy stops working and their parents say you need a battery, what does the battery do? It must supply the power, so when they see it again it kind of makes sense and they can put it all together," said Chris Allen, a teacher at Lima Senior.
Several Lima Senior students demonstrating the experiments say they plan on a career in early childhood education and were thrilled to gain some experience.
