State Senator Cliff Hite announced the senate has passed legislation that will benefit Ohio's student-athlete population.
The new legislation "Lindsay's Law" will work to address and prevent sudden cardiac arrests - the number one cause of death among young athletes. The legislation will call for coaches to go through online training to recognize and know how to deal with symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest. As a former football coach, Senator Hite says he knows that awareness will be crucial to saving lives.
"If I had a kid, when I was coaching, that was showing fainting spells or something, I might have thought he was dogging it or out of shape and maybe even push him harder when that could be the worse thing you could possibly do. So what it does is show the coaches what the symptoms are and then you pull that person from play," State Senator Hite said.
The bill is named after former Miss Ohio, Lindsay Davis, who suffers from a heart condition and has made it her mission to raise awareness. The legislation has been passed in all fifty states and is now awaiting consideration by the Ohio House of Representatives.
