Local literacy officials are concerned that the pandemic has created a gap in the reading skills of area high schoolers.
The Northwest Ohio Literacy Council is charged with working with individuals who are behind on reading skills that can cause them to be left behind in the job market and life in general. With all the virtual learning that was taking place over the Covid-19 pandemic, they are concerned that students may be lagging behind when it comes to literacy.
Executive Director Ken Blanchard explains, "Once they graduate, they'll never pick up another book, magazine, or newspaper. Our biggest concern is, and we are going to see it nationwide, that groups of young adults, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors dropped even further behind the curve trying to do everything remotely."
To raise money, the Literacy Council is selling tickets for their biggest fundraiser. The purse lottery is a chance to win multiple purses as there is a weekly winner matching the Wednesday evening Ohio Lottery Pick 3 drawing. The first purse up for the lottery will be on May 4th. You can get tickets through the Literacy Council.
