HARROD, Ohio (WLIO) -Â The National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice raised money for children's education during its 19th annual Bonita L. Haynes Memorial Golf Scramble.
The fundraiser was a collaboration between the NABCJ, the Mulligans Youth Golf Program, and the Smith-Jones Family Foundation to create scholarships for kids pursuing college degrees. Officials say 27 scholarships have been awarded so far. Â
Four-person teams and individuals could register for the 18-hole scramble at the Colonial Golfers Club. Â
The fundraiser was a collaboration between the NABCJ, the Mulligans Youth Golf Program, and the Smith-Jones Family Foundation.
Members of the Smith-Jones Family Foundation said the event helps unite the organizations in their goal of supporting opportunities for people in their community.
"Instead of us doing three different events, we can collaborate and do one. This means that we can unite, we can join forces, and we can work together towards the same outcome," said Londell Smith, spokesman for the foundation.
"It really is beneficial and also goes to show that one of us can do great by ourselves, but united, we can do even more and we can do even better.
The scramble is held in honor of Haynes, a case manager with the Lima Correctional Institution who was killed while working 30 years ago.
Organizers said they award scholarships in her memory to help her work live on through the work of the youth.
"This is the 30th year that she's been gone. We decided as an affiliate to have our scholarship represent her and for young people and helping them, you know, on their journey to figure out what they want to do in college," said Suzette Clemons, chair with the NABCJ.
"Her life was cut short, so we just want to make sure that we give kids a chance in her name and live the life that maybe she didn't get to live.
The Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution will hold a remembrance ceremony for Haynes on August 6.
