LIMA, OH (WLIO) - For 18 years the Northwest Ohio Literacy Council has hit a triple word score with their Scrabble fundraiser.

Around a dozen teams were trying to rack up the highest score by finding all the words they could with the letters they had. Besides having some word-building fun, the Altrusa group provided food and there were prizes to be won. The council is not only trying to raise money to help adults read better but also raise awareness of what they call the missed epidemic in our area.

“When you have 1 in 6 adults that are functionally illiterate. They can’t get out there to read. Can’t apply for a job. Can’t take care of their medical issues. We feel sorry for them, and we want to help them,” says Ken Blanchard, Northwest Ohio Literacy Council. “As a whole it’s a drag on the community and it’s unnecessary. We can teach people to read. No matter what age, no matter what level, we can teach them to read.”

Blachard says if you know someone that cannot read, come see them at the literacy council to get them help. They are also looking for more people who would like to be tutors in their program, if you would like more information log on to www.limaliteracy.net.
