Ohio Northern swim teams are looking to break a world record, but not the ones you might think.
The dive team and swim team from ONU joined other teams across the country to break a world record for the number of people treading water at the same time. The teams across the United States had to tread water for 30 minutes at the same time to break the world record. More than getting their place in the record books, the athletes also want to help reduce the number of drownings that happen each year around the world. According to the international Life Saving Federation, around 1.2 million people lose their lives each year to drowning.
“For everyone to support anything that allows people to be safe around the water. But of course, because we live in it all the time and we try to teach swim lessons as well as water safety. We want to be a part of something that is supporting an effort that’s very close and near and dear to our hearts,” said Peggy Ewald, Men and Women Swimming Head Coach.
The swim team raised $240. Half will go to the International Water Safety Foundation, the other half will go back to the swim and dive team.
