ONU law students take their education to the courtroom

Ohio Northern University law students take their education beyond their classroom walls.

Law students from Ohio Northern University got a chance to observe arguments for a couple of cases that were being heard by the Ohio's Third District Court of Appeals. The appellate court's special session is part of an educational outreach program that allows students and the public the opportunity to understand more about the judicial process. The students heard from two different cases, one a civil case involving a fatal car accident and a lawsuit, and the other was a criminal case from Allen County, involving charges of kidnapping felonious assault and aggravated murder.

Judge Vernon Preston says taking the court on the road is a great opportunity for both students and the community. "The experience of seeing live oral arguments before a real court, with real attorneys, and real cases."

"Putting the law into practice, and being able to present an argument to the court is definitely a good lesson from all this. I mean we write and we discuss, but we don't present like the attorneys have here," commented ONU First Year Law Student, Jeremy Martin.

After the cases, the appellate judges answered questions from the audience about the appellate process.
