PERRY, OH (WLIO) - Many families affected by the recent hurricanes in the south are still struggling and in need of assistance, so students at Perry High School are stepping up to do their part in relief efforts.
The students realize they will probably never meet these families, but know it's the right thing to do to help them with whatever change they have.
Students launched the "Be the Change" fundraiser earlier this month to help raise money for the families impacted by the hurricanes. Calling on their fellow students and staff to find any loose change they may have lying around the house or their cars to be donated to the fundraiser. The "Be the Change" fundraiser at Perry lasts through this Friday. So far, the students have raised over $300.
"I've been very impressed with how generous these students have been. The whole reason the fundraiser is called "Be the Change" is because everybody has loose change, and that kind of makes it seem a lot more simple when you think about how your loose change that you have just lying around could help somebody have a better life who has gone through these disasters," said Tyler Jackson, Perry High School sophomore and class vice president.
"When we were offered to help, I was like, 'Oh, that's amazing.' and then thought, 'What if people don't donate? What if it's not good? What if people aren't as interested as I am?' And once we started and a lot of people started bringing in their loose change, I just saw that there's good in the world, and I just love that," stated Vallayla Kohler, Perry High School sophomore and class treasurer.
