Portman hopeful China talks will improve after tariffs on Canada and Mexico removed.jpg

After progress was made in trade talks with Canada and Mexico, Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) is confident we will soon be seeing improvements in China talks as well.

While the Trump administration has recently lifted tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from our northern and southern neighbors, they are still putting the pressure on China to do more to protect the intellectual property of American companies operating in China. Portman says that while our country wants China to buy products from us, true progress will not be made until they agree to level the playing field for American companies in their country.

"China's putting tariffs on us because we're putting them on them in order to get them to agree to this, and that's not good for either party," said Portman. "We do need a resolution to these issues. My hope is that China's starting to feel the pressure, will finally come forward and say, okay, we're going to play by the rules and if that happens the tariffs can go off and we'll all be in a better position."

Portman says that hopefully once the Canada and Mexico talks are wrapped up, the China talks will follow suit.
