Toxic Algae Story Stirs Up Emotions at Grand Lake St. Marys

In the era of social media it doesn’t take much to stir up people’s emotions, especially when it comes to residents of Grand Lake St. Marys who have been fighting a toxic algae problem for several years.

On Thursday a blogger came out with a story titled Grand Lake Avoid All Contact with the Water and pointed out the state had ordered red signs put up to get that message across. The thing is, those signs have been up for quite a while. Yes the lake does have toxic algae and there has been an on-going effort to try to correct the problem. Jared Ebbing is a member of the Lake Restoration Commission and was concerned about the motives and timing of the story given the upcoming fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Lake Improvement Association, the first group formed to try and get a handle on the problem will meet in their regular monthly meeting on Saturday. We’ll be there to cover it and find out what’s being done to help clean up Grand Lake St. Marys.    Â
