Upper Scioto Valley HS Relay For Life Raises Thousands

Hundreds crowded the parking lot of a school in McGuffey Friday morning to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

"Remember loved ones lost and right back against the disease," was part of the opening speech at Friday's annual Relay for Life at Upper Scioto Valley high School.

"It means a lot to me that so many people support it," said Mary Trudgeon, a Student Council advisor. "It's a small community, and I love the fact that so many people come out, it's really a lot of fun."

A community that may be small, but is big in their strength and teamwork for a cause.

"I have granddaughters who went to school here and they are always very involved in it because of me. And my youngest granddaughter, this is her last year to help with it, so I wanted to be sure to be here for her," said Charlotte Pratt.

Pratt is a cancer survivor, who has walked for seven out of the eight Relay for Life events held at the school.

"It's wonderful," she said. "There are so many good kids that have done so much, and we have done so much. I'm so proud of this school for what they've done for American Cancer Society."

About 30 survivors are participating in this year's Relay for Life. In total, about 600 people are here to support them.

And for members of the Student Council who organize and run the event, it's worth their hard work.

"It's just great feeling, seeing them walk, and just be survivors, and have great feeling of being a survivor," said senior Maddison Lowery.

In the eight years the school has held the relay for life, they have raised a total of $75,000. And this year, they hoped to raise at least $10,000 more.
