The Allen County Veterans Service Commission wants to make sure that those who have served our country don’t go hungry this Christmas.

Any Allen County Veteran in honorable standing can apply for a $30 food voucher at the commission’s office on the first floor of the courthouse. The voucher can be redeemed at Chief Supermarket for food items to help them through the holidays. The program is much more than just the food voucher as it gets veterans into the office where they learn more about what other benefits are available to them.

Executive Director Tamara Wilson says the program has grown over the years with more and more veterans being assisted. “We just did it at Thanksgiving time and we had over 500 applicants. So that was huge, so over 500 veterans or veterans' dependents came through our door which is an opportunity for us to make sure that they know about different VA benefits and what they’re entitled too.”

Wilson says it takes about 10 minutes to go through the application process at their office starting Monday, December 16th through Monday, December 23rd. Call their office at 419-223-8522 to find out what information you will need to bring with you.
