The Wapakoneta community got a sneak peek at a statue being built for their downtown area.
Sculptor Mike Tizzano has been working on a bronze statue of Neil Armstrong depicted in his homecoming parade. He brought the sculpture as well as a smaller model to Wapakoneta Middle School to show his progress so far. Tizzano says he is only about 10% done with the full-scale statue. One of the biggest challenges he's been facing in the project is capturing the right side of Armstrong.
"The greatest challenge right now is finding enough really good photos of Neil's face," says Tizzano. "Almost every photo of him shows the front left part of his face and I found one photo that will work but from the Internet, it's a very small photo so we're working with NASA and maybe some family members that can hopefully come up with some better pictures."
While Tizzano was at the middle school, he walked the crowd through the different aspects of math, engineering, and construction it takes to bring the piece to life. The sculpture is set to be installed next July for the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.
