After a summer of uncertainty, a huge swarm of bookworms lined up and dashed through the aisles as the AAUW Book Fair kicked off Tuesday! Residents and travelers perused thousands of books ranging from children's books to large novels of non-fiction, romance, and many more genres. There were also games, DVDs, and even sheet music. The book sale is important to the community as money raised will go toward college scholarships for area girls, a tradition since 1957. This year, AAUW presented 14 scholarships of $1,500 each. The book fair is a Lima staple, and organizers are happy to bring it back another year especially after worrying if a location was available.
Have you ever wondered what people do with all the ribbons they win at the fair? Well, the Open Class exhibition has challenged people to get creative with them. July 19, 2024, Press Release from the Allen County Museum: On August 17, 2024, the last temporary exhibition of the year will open at the Allen County Museum. The exhibition is The Art of Domesticity and will focus on the decorative arts from the 19th and 20th centuries as well as works by contemporary artists. The Allen County Museum staff organized the exhibition, which will include five contemporary women artists’ artworks. Historically, women have been pushed towards artistic expression in art forms considered acceptable for them—knitting, weaving, quilting, needlepoint, and porcelain painting—media that could be done at home. This exhibition will celebrate and investigate not only these works of art done in the past but also contemporary artists who have turned those media or subject matters into “fine art.”
