The City of Lima once again getting funding from the U.S. Conference of Mayors to create a new initiative for residents. This time the money is going to help the youth of Lima. The city was the 2nd place winner of the 2025 Childhood Obesity Prevention Environmental Health and Sustainability Awards. It will provide $50,000 that will go to creating the "Ride to Thrive Lima Youth Bike Program."

They call it human-powered transportation, and it's important that municipalities know how it is used in the communities. Federally funded projects that include signage, crosswalks, changes in land use, and other infrastructure issues are determined from this data. The Allen County Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force is gearing up for its fall count and looking for volunteers. No experience is needed as you are assigned an area to watch for 2 hours and keep a tally of people who are riding bikes, walking, using scooters, or any other method of human-powered transportation.

The American Legion Post 96 continues their efforts to bring some Christmas cheer to some local kids. For several years now, the veterans, Sons of the Legion and the Ladies’ Auxiliary have been hosting a Children’s Christmas Party.  This year, over 120 kids ages birth to 12 years got presents, along with other food and goodies.  Getting ready for the Christmas Party is a year long process with the Legion hosting fundraisers to purchase the gifts.   But this year some businesses and organizations stepped up to help them out to make sure the kids had a good Christmas.

As deputies approached Darr, shots rang out with one striking a house just 10 feet from the deputies and Darr. Multiple law enforcement officers responded, and casings were found on Prospect Avenue and fragmented pieces of a bullet from the back of the house, but no shooter was found. GOBA is an annual eight-day bicycle tour. On average, bicyclists ride 50 miles per day exploring the different attractions and destinations that predetermined host cities have to offer. Host cities also provide a large camping site for riders known as a Gobaville. This year, the tour takes place in western Ohio with riders arriving in Sidney on Saturday.

Perry Township – On May 12, 2022, at approximately 11:50 P.M. troopers responded to a report of a bicyclist being struck on SR 309, near Thayer Rd. Hali N. Conner, age 33, of Lima, was riding a bicycle eastbound on SR 309, near the right side berm when she was struck by an eastbound passenger vehicle.

By keeping track of how many people are using “human-powered” transportation, municipalities can get grant dollars to make improvements to local infrastructure. State and federal grant dollars are available to help with bike paths, crosswalks, and signage. The Allen County Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force is looking for volunteers to take part in their spring count.

On Friday, Kalida EMS and Safe Kids of Greater Toledo appeared at the elementary school in order to teach kids about bike safety. Topics included helmet use, bike conditions, and other safety measures that kids can take while they enjoy riding their bicycles this summer. Special demonstrations were shown in order to show kids the proper way to wear a helmet, and how a helmet can protect them in case of an accident.
