A complaint and notice of appeal was filed earlier this month by Lima Resident Alice Donahue to Allen County Common Pleas Court against Elizabeth Hardesty, all members of the board of elections, its director, and the City of Lima. However, a motion was submitted to remove the City of Lima from the lawsuit. That motion has since been granted.
Lima City Council originally requested the law director to answer questions on who judges residency when it comes to elections. The request comes in response to a recent lawsuit filed against the board of elections and mayoral candidate Elizabeth Hardesty on her eligibility to run for lima mayor. The lawsuit states that she has not lived in the city for at least six months. According to Lima City Charter, it is listed that all elected officials must be residents and electors within the sixth month period before the last date on which nominating petitions are due.
May 4th, 2021 is election day, with the deadline to register for the primary election set at Monday, April 5th, 2021. Absentee voting will begin on Tuesday, April 6th, 2021 at noon, with a deadline to submit an absentee ballot by mail request form set on Saturday, May 1st, 2021. The Allen County Board of Elections have voted to keep a Lima Mayoral Candidate on the upcoming ballot. Elizabeth Hardesty faced a challenge for her candidacy after submitting her petition to the board of elections on February 4th, 2021.
The seat will not appear on the upcoming ballot, as Thompson was unopposed. According to the Lima City Law Director Anthony Geiger, Thompson will finish her term, which concludes at the end of this year. Lima City Council will then need to fill the vacancy for the next term, which starts on January 22nd.
People were lined up at the Allen County Board of Elections when the doors opened and throughout the day. Today also marks the day that absentee ballots will be mailed out to the 13-thousand Allen County voters requested. You can still request an absentee ballot, but election officials say not to wait until the last minute. As the general election approaches the Board of Elections will have extended hours. Back in March, the primary election was delayed due to the pandemic, and voters today say they want to make sure they get their vote in early.
The Allen County Board of Elections reminds people to send in their absentee ballot applications now if they want to make the April 27th deadline. Applications for an absentee ballot must be postmarked by April 27th or received by your county's board of elections by the 28th. Those with Allen County's board say that it can take around two to five days for your application to reach them in the mail, so sending it sooner rather than later is best. They also recommend double-checking your application to be sure that you haven't missed any important information.
