According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, there is no such thing as 100-percent safe ice. Officials recommend wearing a life vest underneath winter clothing when venturing onto frozen waterways. They also advise going out in pairs and informing someone of your planned location and return time.
Authorities say the man appeared to have been ice fishing when he broke through the ice and entered the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene after crews recovered him from the reservoir.
Director Randy Kimpell said the center remains active throughout the day. “We’re open for everybody and anybody, but we’re open from 8:30 to five. You know, even in between the meals, we’re still open. We have a lot of people that come here first thing in the morning and are here till we close it at night.”
While temperatures may be warming up for now, Old Man Winter is just around the corner, and one local organization is preparing to help keep area youth warm.
The PIPP program helps eligible individuals manage their energy bills. To qualify, your income must fall within 175% of the federal poverty level. For example, a family of four with a total yearly income of up to $54,600 could be eligible for assistance.
A Findlay man has been charged with stabbing another man in the head last month.
Several area organizations are opening their doors to help people to get out of these cold temperatures. In Putnam County, the Office of Public Safety has released four warming station locations that will be open today through Wednesday. The City of Findlay says the City Mission, located at 510 West Main Cross, Findlay, Ohio, will be open as a warming center and for overnight stays.

With an unusually warm winter season thus far, I talked with Allen County EMA Director, Tom Berger, about some important measures to take should you have to venture outside. Many people will stay inside their homes using heaters and furnaces to stay warm, but not properly operating these heat sources could result in fires. To help raise awareness on ways to prevent winter house fires, I visited Warren Pughsley, an Inspector with the Lima Fire Department, about determining strategies to reduce the risk of house fires during cold weather.
