With the temperatures dipping into the teens in the next few days, many people will be trying to keep warm. And that usually includes portable space heaters. Lima Fire Department officials say to make sure your heater has a tip-over shut-off safety mechanism and that it has been approved by the Underwriters Laboratory. They also say to keep heaters in plain sight with nothing around them.

With the winter months nearly upon us, it's time to start preparing for harsher conditions. Yesterday began Winter Safety Awareness Week, and everyone should make sure they have what they need to combat the unpredictable weather. Put in place an emergency plan to make sure everyone in the household is on the same page. Test your heating systems and your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure everything is in working order. And stock up on essentials in case you're stuck in your home for an extended period of time.

Although temperatures feel more like spring, Old Man Winter is right around the corner. The West Ohio Community Action Partnership wants to make sure those who qualify for energy assistance are getting it. Their "Winter Crisis" program started on November 1, 2024, and runs through the end of March 2025. It provides a once-per-season "benefit payment" for heating and/or electric accounts.

From now through March 31, 2025, income-eligible Ohioans can receive one-time assistance with their home energy bill through the Ohio Department of Development’s Home Energy Assistance Winter Crisis Program.

Our OhioMeansJobs Student Employee of the Month is Ethan Reed, a 2024 Apollo Career Center graduate who went straight from the classroom to a full-time position. Bethany Ulrick tells us more. Ethan Reed has been working at Washam Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning since June 2023. He worked part-time during his senior year at Apollo Career Center, and through his HVAC courses, he was able to graduate with four industry certifications and jump straight into a job he enjoys.

Winter is almost here, and that means hazardous snow, ice, and cold could make an appearance soon! To ensure residents are prepared, the State of Ohio has recognized this week, November 12th through the 18th, as "Winter Safety Awareness Week," a time that Allen County EMA Director, Tom Berger, wants everyone to use to make sure they are winter weather ready.

Space heaters are the go-to, and the National Fire Protection Association says they result in one-third of all winter house fires and 8 out of 10 heating fire deaths. Local fire departments say to keep the heating units at least three feet from any flammable objects. If you plan on purchasing a new space heater, ensure the product is UL listed which means it includes protective features to lower the risk of a fire if tipped over.
