COLUMBUS, OHIO (WLIO) - The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office is reminding people that the cold weather is coming, so it would be a good idea to get your heating system or fireplace checked to make sure it is working properly before you put it into use this winter.
If you do put a space heater in a child’s room, make sure they know how to use it safely and to not put anything flammable next to the heater.
Plus, if you are using a space heater to help take the chill out of the air. To make sure you turn them off when you leave the room or go to bed. And make sure it has an important safety feature to help prevent fires from starting.
“You have to make sure you are buying a safe space heater that has a tip-off protection or tip-over protection. If it tips over, it will stop working; it will basically block the power so you are not going to burn anything. Additionally, make sure you are using space heaters that are supposed to be used inside. There are a lot of indoor/outdoor heaters that really should not be used inside, i.e., kerosene. Kerosene does put off carbon monoxide. The big torpedo heaters that are used in garages. They are made for garages, but there has to be a lot of ventilation with that. Those things should not be used in your house,” says Anita Methany, Ohio’s Fire Prevention Bureau Chief.
