To ensure residents are prepared, the State of Ohio has recognized this week, November 12th through the 18th, as "Winter Safety Awareness Week," a time that Allen County EMA Director, Tom Berger, wants everyone to use to make sure they are winter weather ready.

"This week is to prepare our residents for winter weather that we know is right around the corner here in west-central Ohio, so what that means is we're asking folks to take an opportunity to take a look around their homes or vehicles to make sure that they are winter weather ready," explains Tom Berger, Director, Allen County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Whether you remain at home or must drive during inclement winter weather, there are ways you can stay safe both inside and outside.

"However you heat your home, whether it be a wood burner or a natural gas furnace, make sure that you are having those inspected by a licensed vendor to come in and make sure they are operating properly; make sure that your chimneys are clear. It's key that you take a look at your vehicle and make sure that it is roadworthy, winter weather roadworthy, making sure that you have good tread on your tires. Inside your vehicle, make sure that you have a emergency kit inside your vehicle, jumper cables, some water, batteries, flashlight, cell phone charger," adds Berger.

And if you are planning to drive, be sure to check your county's snow emergency level.

"Level 1 roadways, issued in Allen County, mean that Allen County roads are snow-covered. Level 2 means that they are snow-covered with heavy drifting, and some of those roads are going to be impassable when you head out... and when that level 3 warning is issued, that's when state routes are closed and most of the county roads are closed as well," says Berger.

Regardless of whether or not we observe a snowy, cold, or icy winter this year, remember, it only takes one major winter storm to potentially prove life-threatening. Therefore, early preparation is key to help you stay safe.
