Some hot chocolate and some cool crafts make for a fun morning at the Lima Public Library. The library hosted a crafting event Saturday morning to give kids the chance to make faces with stickers. The event promotes facial recognition skills for young children, and they also got the chance to enjoy some cocoa too.
Lima South Science and Technology Magnet students engaged in fun science lessons on Tuesday. The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District hosted the life science lessons for students from kindergarten through fifth grade. Various topics were on the table, including living versus non-living, energy transfer, the food chain, and even worms. Not only can the science lessons be brought back to the classroom, but they will also help prepare students for field trips planned in the spring.
An associate professor from Ohio State-Main Campus traveled to Lima on Monday to train community members on how to help people with autism through theatre. The training is part of the Shakespeare and Autism Project. On Monday, Ohio State Associate Professor and Artist Laureate, Kevin McClatchy, trained attendees ways to help people on the autism spectrum through the concepts of Shakespearian theatre. The Shakespearian-inspired games and exercises completed on Monday showed attendees how theatre can be used to strengthen communication and emotional skills and allow for positive growth for people on the autism spectrum.

One in six adults in Allen County reads at a 3rd grade level or lower, and these numbers haven't really changed in years. The Northwest Ohio Literacy Council and Lima City Schools want to change that statistic. This week is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith presented them with a proclamation encouraging individuals struggling with basic academic skills to take advantage of the services offered by these two programs. Reading is something anyone can do, and we as a community need to de-stigmatize the issue of adult literacy.
The Lima Rotary Club is learning how to deal with some of the challenges of Alzheimer's and dementia. An expert from Kessler Estates gave a presentation to the club on effective communication with people who have a disease that impacts their memory and cognitive function. Difficulty understanding and being understood can be one of the biggest sources of stress for caregivers and their loved ones. Instead of getting frustrated, experts say to keep the conversation positive, speak slowly, and use clear and simple language. It's also important to be an active listener.

Information on the dashboard is available for each of the past five years. The new online resource is available to fire departments, media outlets and the general public, allowing easy access to up-to-date information regarding grant funding that has been awarded in support of MARCS (Multi-Agency Radio Communications), equipment and training initiatives. Additional key features of the dashboard include the ability to sort and filter grants by county and grant type, and also search for grants by individual department.
Making the best out of a bad situation is just one of the lessons Cridersville Elementary School students were learning on Tuesday. The "GOOD" program has become a staple for fourth graders at the school as former teacher Ron Derry educates them about the struggles he faced after becoming blind. Derry taught in the Columbus area and decided to continue working with kids by starting his own motivational program, "Go On—Or Defeated," known as "GOOD," and has encouraged thousands of students across Ohio to make good life decisions.
In one week, the Spencerville Local School District will be going back to class, and today the teachers and staff got a fun and exciting welcome back. Keynote speaker Jon Petz joined the Bearcats staff in welcoming another school year with his inspiring speeches and interactive exercises. Petz is a Columbus, Ohio, native, and along with his experience as a keynote speaker, he is also a magician and performed several magic tricks with lessons embedded in them for the staff to take away. Petz also emphasized to the staff that they play a critical role in the development of the students, and they need to know the value they have in the students lives and the value the students can have in theirs.
Your old books could help bring joy to others that the Area Agency on Aging service. The Area Agency on Aging is holding its first-ever book drive. They are collecting new and gently used books for adults and kids. The kids' books will be donated to schools that take part in their retired senior volunteer program. However, the adult books will be used to create a library in the new training center that the agency is putting in.
