The Lima Noon Optimist Club is continuing their mission to keep children safe this summer. This is the second week of their Safety City program, dedicated to teaching kids vital safety skills, from navigating traffic to understanding fire safety, and even personal safety tips.

It’s once again time for the Toys for Tots campaign; a collaborative effort between the Salvation Army, the Marine Corps, and the Lima Noon Optimists. The 2021 Toys for Tots campaign officially kicked off at Wednesday's Optimist meeting, and soon, the collection boxes will be placed in buildings throughout the area.

The Lima Noon Optimists honored local high schoolers Wednesday afternoon with their annual Youth Appreciation Week program. 12 area juniors and seniors were nominated by their schools and organizations for this recognition.

Given the national climate around law enforcement, the Lima Noon Optimists chose to give the Respect the Law Award to the Fraternal Order of Police.

The award typically goes to a community member that shows heroism. The president of the FOP says it means a lot in a time he feels police are more attacked than ever. Touching on the idea of defunding police, he says although possible, it wouldn't work reallocating city funds. He cited a 2016 Yale study that states there was no racial bias found in fatal shootings by police but there was bias in use of force. Despite that, he believes officers have no hidden agenda.

Dozens gathering to remember a young man that touched many hearts. October 17th will always be known as "Maleek L. Nelson Day" in the City of Lima. The Lima Noon Optimists Safety City Playground was dedicated in memory of young Maleek. In January of 2017, at the age of 7, Maleek was made an honorary Lima Police Officer. He always wanted to be a cop but a heart defect did not make that possible. Maleek passed away on October 17th, 2018. Today(10/17/19), his father, along with local law enforcement, city officials, family, and friends remembered a special young man who was wise beyond his years.

Thousand headed out to the Allen County Fairgrounds for the Lima Noon Optimists Home Show and Business Expo, their largest fundraiser of the year that will go to programs all over the area. “That goes to the Lima Noon Optimists and that, in turn, benefits Safety City,” said Cindy Nelson, President of the Lima Noon Optimists Club. “We also do little league, we work with the Lima Area Youth Orchestra, we do the constitution project with the fourth graders in Allen County, so really just hitting all different aspects."
