It was the annual auxiliary craft show. Hundreds of volunteers have been working year-round to make the crafts filling the tables. There were also homemade candy and baked goods along with raffle baskets. The proceeds from the sale go towards the million-dollar pledge the auxiliary made to the graduate medical education center. Organizers say it was wonderful to see everyone out supporting them as it was the first street fair since the pandemic.
Nearly 1 in 8 women will face a breast cancer diagnosis, however, the death rate among them has decreased due to early cancer screenings. The medical center is holding their first "I Pink I Can" 5K Run/Walk to bring awareness to breast cancer and early detection.
Mercy Health hosted a lunch for retired employees from the medical center. Around 230 retirees were on hand to reminisce and to learn the latest what is going on at the hospital. Some of the employees liked St. Rita's so much they returned to volunteer at the hospital after they retired. The luncheon is more like a family reunion just how close everyone got during their years working together.
Thursday, crews found a time capsule in the cornerstone of the building. No one knew it was there and plans went into motion to open it in special way. Three nursing students from the last graduating class in 1971 were able to attend and help open the box. It was somewhat small and made of metal and inside there was an array of objects. Newspapers dating back to 1959, a picture of the beginning of construction of the building, multiple medals and medallions, and a rosary. The ladies said it was exciting to be part of the opening.
A special honor, the Greg King Award, was presented to a long-time member of the Bath Township Fire Department Bill Stippich, who only recently retired, but still plans on volunteering at the department. He said it's the positive outcomes that make it all worthwhile. Bath Township Fire Chief Joe Kitchen presented the award to Stippich.
Wednesday, Mercy Health Saint Rita’s held a cookout for all their staff as a thank you for all they have done and pushed through during COVID-19. It was also a celebration for National Hospital Week. It was a time that associates could get out of the building to grab a quick bite, relax, and just take a breath.
