“Well, it's basically like a buddy's program where us eighth graders, we go down to the kindergarten room, and we sort of like make designs with the kids, and we like to spend time with them, so then they're just not stuck in class all day, so they can just have some fun,” said Matthew Askins, an eighth-grade student.

In their Project Lead the Way Class, students had the opportunity to dissect and label a sheep's brain. It's part of their medical detective's course. They've been learning about patient signs and symptoms and they've recently been studying the brain. This hands-on activity allows them to take the next step to identify and label a real brain. Their teacher hopes the course shows the students they have a lot of career options.

Students at Lima’s South Science and Technology Magnet School were learning about the world of structural engineering Monday morning. The Imagination Station out of Toledo bringing their structural fair giving the children the chance to build bridges, arches, wind and earthquake resistant structures, along with rockets and a blueprint challenge. The students enjoy the hands-on activities and educators say learning this way has a way of sticking around.

Lima City Schools finished its first mandatory Emergency Operation Plan Drill at South Science and Technology Magnet School. It's a state-mandated drill that simulates an active shooter situation. The schools work together with the Lima Police, fire department, and Allen County Emergency Management Agency. The school district's director of security says this is, unfortunately, the world we live in, but a good chance to collaborate with the police and fire department and make sure everything runs properly. While the drill was run, the other schools in the district participated by remaining on lockdown.

Eighth-grade students at South Science and Technology Magnet School are filming a mockumentary on the late William Fowler. Fowler was an astrophysicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983 for his work that shows how all the natural elements in the Periodic Table are forged under extreme conditions across the course of a star’s lifetime. Fowler grew up in the city of Lima and is an inspiration to future scientists from the area. The William Fowler mockumentary is a partnership between the Lima City Schools, the City of Lima, and Ohio State University at Lima. The film is expected to be completed by this winter, and a trailer being completed next month.

Eighth graders at South Science and Technology Magnet School showed off their innovative side at the end of the year Project Lead the Way presentations. “They’ve been working on a project lead the way course called innovators and makers and through that, they’ve been working with micro bits and programming, coding those micro bits," said Paulette Boes, a social studies and technology teacher at the school.

Students from across Lima City Schools showcased their talents on Wednesday at the Enrichment Expo. The expo featured various projects from paper mache, to wooden structures, and poster boards displaying what kids wanted to be when they grew up and where they would like to travel. These projects were created throughout the school year by gifted fifth through eighth grade students. One eighth grader said she enjoyed this project because she got to learn more about herself.
