Lima City Schools is working to keep students engaged and learning after the school year ends.
More than a dozen Elida elementary students are spending part of their summer exploring the world of dinosaurs through the district’s summer library program. The weekly camp combines reading, crafts and hands-on activities designed to keep children engaged and learning throughout June.
Students out of school for the summer are taking aim at a new skill this week.
Students in grades one through six participated in Camp Invention, a national STEM program focused on hands-on learning.
Cleveland’s firsthand account of his time with the 3/25 is now the subject of his book, Mother’s Day, titled after the day his unit was ambushed. Several of his friends were killed or injured in the attack, including Cleveland himself. He said writing the book is his way of keeping their memory alive.
Today, the Lima Public Library kicked off their summer reading program.
“We can make things with our hands, without an iPad or a phone or a computer,” said Sarah Waters, professor of music at Ohio Northern University. “I mean, look, they got—I got glue all over me. They’re painting. They’re making gourds. We’re going to construct drums. I think we’re losing touch with our humanness, our elements of nature.”
