LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Students out of school for the summer are taking aim at a new skill this week.

The Johnny Appleseed Park District is hosting its annual archery camps, offering sessions for both beginner and experienced archers. Campers in the "Bullseye Basics" program learned the fundamentals of archery, including how to safely handle a bow, properly shoot and retrieve arrows. Instructors said safety is the first lesson before campers move on to games and target challenges.

"They get really excited about everything because this is beginner level, so everything is new," said Haley Williams, a naturalist with the park district. "This morning, they got to pop balloons filled with candy and shoot at dinosaur targets, so they're having a lot of fun."

"We learned the different parts of the bow, how to use them and just the basic steps," said archery camper Elleah McClure. "It's really great. I love it."

The park district will continue offering a variety of programs and camps throughout the summer.
