LIMA (WLIO) — Russia High School saw its streak of four consecutive trips to the state tournament come to an end Friday with a 5-1 loss to Newton Local High School in a Division 7 regional semifinal at Cedarville University.

Newton Local jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, including an RBI single that plated the Indians' first run of the game.

Russia pitcher Maddox Goubeaux limited further damage by recording a strikeout to end the inning. The Raiders' ace finished the day with eight strikeouts.

The Raiders threatened in the bottom of the first when Michael Voisard blasted a ball over the right fielder's head for a leadoff triple, but Russia was unable to cash in and remained behind 2-0.

Trailing 5-0 in the sixth inning, Russia finally broke through offensively. Goubeaux ripped a double down the left-field line that reached the wall, allowing Cooper Unverferth to score and cut the deficit to 5-1.

The Raiders brought the tying run no closer, and their season came to an end in the seventh inning as Newton Local secured the final out.

Russia finishes the season with a 15-13 record, while Newton Local advances to the regional final. The loss also ends the Raiders' streak of four straight state tournament appearances.
