LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Thursday marked the last day of class for Lima City Schools, and the Ohio and Lima Education Associations wanted to send students home with plenty of resources to continue learning over the summer.
The third annual Summer Celebration of Diverse Readers provided families with free activities, community resources, and thousands of books for pre-K through 12th grade readers. All of the books featured diverse characters written by diverse authors so students could learn about — and relate to — the diversity in their community.
The third annual Summer Celebration of Diverse Readers provided families with free activities, community resources, and thousands of books for pre-K through 12th grade readers.
"So the celebration of diverse readers is really important because we know as public school educators who are committed to serving every single student, regardless of their race or their gender or their background, that they are safe, that they're welcoming, but they're also stimulated in their learning, because they can identify, you know, with those characters, with those stories," said Scott DiMauro, president of the Ohio Education Association.
"I hope that all of the children go home with some good books to read that they will get to enjoy over the summer, they're going to be gone from us teachers for a while, and we want them to still read, to still enjoy that love of learning and reading, and I hope that they find some books that match how they feel, match who they are, who they look like," said Lyn Sellati, a teacher with Lima City Schools.
Organizers also encouraged parents and guardians to keep their kids engaged in learning throughout the summer.
