Tax season is here, and there are a lot of questions as residents file the necessary paperwork.
Monday, May 17th is the last day to file your tax returns for 2020, and there are only a few hours left to get it done.
The postponed date to file income taxes for the year 2020 is May 17th, 2021. The extra month is in response to the pandemic and should allow taxpayers time to gather necessary documents from last year. The owner of Liberty Tax Service in Lima, Veronica Dortch, says everyone should have received all they need to file their taxes by now, and to not wait too long to get it done.
If you received unemployment benefits, it is important to remember that it can be listed as taxable income. This information will need to be included in Tax Form 1099-G. If you did not receive your stimulus payments, it is also important to report this when filing your taxes. Any amount that you did not receive could be brought back to you in the form of a rebate when filing your taxes.
Now that we're in the new year, it's time to start thinking about preparing everything you need to file your tax return. We spoke with a local CPA (Certified Public Accountant) about what people should be doing around this time for their tax returns. He says the biggest thing right now is to watch the mail - usually between January and the beginning of February is when important forms like your W2s and 1098s arrive.

Certified public accountant Robert Sielschott said large corporations moving operations back to the United States and small businesses saw tax breaks under the new code but young families reaped the real benefits of the changes by getting double the credit for their children 16 and under.
