The Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities recently announced new changes in future leadership. Superintendent Theresa Schnipke has announced that the Allen County Board of DD has begun preparations to pursue a shared superintendent with the Auglaize County Board of Developmental Disabilities as Schnipke nears her retirement. On August 1st, 2024, Auglaize County Board of DD Superintendent Renee Kohler will head the shared superintendent role for both counties. On Tuesday afternoon, we talked with Schnipke on how the shared superintendent system will work.

Right next to the All-Abilities Playground, they created a Butterfly Memorial Garden, complete with 94 acrylic butterflies. Each of the butterflies has a name on it in memory of a person that has passed away. During the dedication ceremony, some of the staff and family members talked about how the butterfly is a perfect representation of the people they lost.

"Someone is here to help": that's the message that Mary Jane Mullenhour wants to spread to every person that goes through the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, support group. Mullenhour has lead the local NAMI support group for several years; in fact, it's a passion for helping those who are dealing with mental issues that has driven Mullenhour to give her time for others for over 45 years.

Last year was the first time the “Reverse Parade” was put on by the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities as a way for kids and families to get out of the house and safely mingle with others in the community during the pandemic. The event was so popular that they brought it back for a second year, with perfect weather. People with developmental disabilities and their families drove through the parade route receiving treats from employees, along with many community organizations and businesses.

The All Ability Playground project through the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities and The Arc of Allen County has been in the works for a few years now, but is nearing its completion. The first playground at Camp Robin Rogers in Spencerville has been open since last fall. Children and families from all over have been enjoying it this summer, especially at The Arc's day camp. The Arc of Allen County Executive Director, Brad Perrot, says people of all abilities and ages have been able to enjoy the project because of the new and unique equipment.

The staff of the board speaking to Lima Rotarians explaining that neglect and abuse of individuals with disabilities does happen in Allen County. Their mission this month is to encourage people to be good neighbors to those with disabilities. Give a helping hand, talk with them and get to know them. That connection could make a difference in their lives.
