August 14, 2024, Press Release from the Ohio Department of Transportation: COLUMBUS, OHIO – In a little under a year, DriveOhio’s Rural Automated Driving Systems (ADS) project collected nearly 60 terabytes of data that will help define future technology needs for automated vehicles in rural environments. While automated driving systems have the potential to dramatically improve roadway safety, data shows that these systems must be refined to maximize that potential in rural areas. Most automated vehicle testing to date has been conducted in urban areas without the hilly and curvy terrain, limited sight distances, and shaded tree canopies typical of a rural environment. Funded in part by a $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, this project accomplished one of the most comprehensive testing efforts yet to be conducted on rural roads in the United States.

A semi-truck driven by Richard Lavander of Ontario, Canada, attempted to drive around the crossbucks when he was struck by an eastbound train. Deputies say the force of the impact separated the semi-tractor from the trailer, and the train pushed the semi around a quarter of a mile.

But the pattern of the storm has not been consistent, sometimes we will get a stretch of flurries, other times, periods of calm. But the weather can change at just a minute's notice. There is plenty of snow to plow at restaurant parking lots, sidewalks, and more. Contractors have been busy helping clear out areas that the city and county cannot get to.
Plows are getting a once over and fluids getting topped off before they start tackling the roads when the first snowflake falls early Wednesday morning. They also had tanker trucks out, putting salt brine on the primary roads to help clear them later. With heavy wet snow expected, the trucks will be moving slower, so District 1 officials ask that you give the snow plows their space.
