A 50th Anniversary Party will be held this Saturday, June 25th from 9:30 AM - 10:00 PM at the Ottawa Metro Park. The public is invited to attend to enjoy the celebrations. A variety of events are planned for the celebration, such as a zip line, axe throwing, animal Olympics, and more.
The Johnny Appleseed Park District will be celebrating a major milestone this year. The tagline for the 50th anniversary is "Celebrate tradition -- embrace innovation". The district states that it is crucial that they make a commitment to embracing ways that they can improve the local parks. The district is also gearing up for a special fifty-mile challenge to help celebrate the milestone.
The Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District is using Arbor Day this year to honor those in our area impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Two white oak trees were planted in Heritage Park to honor Allen County healthcare workers, and those who lost their lives to the virus. Representatives from Allen County Public Health, Mercy Health - St. Rita's, and Lima Memorial Health System helped set the trees in their new home. To them and the park district, these trees represent more than just a site of dedication.
The Lima Rotary Club has moved from virtual meetings back into the Veterans Memorial Civic Center. It's their first meeting in person since the COVID-19 pandemic began. And their first guest was the newly promoted Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park Director, Tyler Black. He previously served as deputy director. Black spoke about what the park district is working on this summer. Due to the pandemic, summer camps have moved virtual where children can pick up a camp kit and follow along online. They are also working on several projects like widening pathways, creating new park access points and maintenance on playgrounds and shelter houses.
The Johnny Appleseed Metropollitan Park District now has a date to open the Ottawa Metro Park Campgrounds, but it won't be open in time for Memorial Day weekend. Although the state has allowed campgrounds to open tomorrow, the Ottawa Metro Park campgrounds will open next Wednesday, May 27, at noon. The deputy director of the park district said they felt this was a good date because it gives employees enough time to prepare and get all the necessary checks and cleaning done. Spaces will be given on a first come first serve basis. They ask you to maintain social distancing and groups must be ten people or less.
On Wednesday, the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District shared some of its conservation efforts at the annual West Central Ohio Land Conservancy meeting. The park district director talked about some current projects involving wetlands, prairie restoration, and much more. The park district currently has 15 acres of land used for conservation efforts. They felt it was important to present at the meeting because they both share the same conservancy goals.
A new bike and pedestrian trail in Allen County will allow Delphos and Spencerville residents to get around easier than before. The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District just recently finished phase two of its Miami Erie Canal Towpath. An additional four and a half miles of new crush limestone trail were added during this phase, making it a total of 8 miles. The cost of phase two was around $700, making the total $1.2 million. The trail begins off of Zion Church Road and continues through to the southern part of Delphos.
