MARIA STEIN, Ohio (WLIO) — Marion Local's Oliver Huelsman is described as a hardworking and dedicated athlete.
The Flyers senior is a state champion in football and track and field and a state runner-up in basketball. On top of his athletic success, Huelsman shines in the classroom with a 3.8 GPA.
"Oliver is just a tremendously hard worker. He'll do anything that you ask. He's a great leader and role model for everybody else," said Marion Local boys basketball head coach Kurt Goettemoeller.
Marion Local's Oliver Huelsman is no stranger to success. He's won state titles in football and track and field, and last season was part of the Flyers' state runner-up basketball team.
Oliver's love for all three sports comes from his family. "I'm just from a family that's always loved sports," Huelsman said. "I've always loved it myself. My siblings, they've all been three-sport athletes. My dad was, all his siblings were always three-sport athletes, and I've just enjoyed participating in all of them."
"Well, it's really difficult in this day and age of being a three-sport athlete because you're getting pulled in a lot of different directions, but Oliver has handled it really well, and he's done that just because he works so hard," Goettemoeller said. "If you're willing to work as hard as he is, you can pull it off. And Oliver's been really successful because of how hard of a worker he is."
Huelsman is just as dedicated to his craft in the classroom. The senior has a 3.8 GPA.
"The first thing that stands out about Oliver as a student is just like he never wanted to just get to the answer," said Marion Local math teacher Jacob Sherrick.
"He wanted to understand why we got to the answer and understand the depth of the problems that we were doing and stuff like that and the framework that allowed him to get there. So that was different from other kids because some people just want to get the answer and that wasn't the case with Oliver."
Huelsman's plans after high school are to attend the University of Cincinnati to major in mechanical engineering. "I've always been a person that wants to understand how things work and understanding the internal components, how those all work," Huelsman said. "It helps that my brother was a mechanical engineer. I'm able to look up to him a lot."
While the hardware speaks for itself, Huelsman says the memories and the people behind the program are what matters most to him.
"Being a part of this school, this program has been huge," Huelsman said. "Being able to have the success that we've had, being a part of that, it's just been so enjoyable. I've had so much fun throughout my high school career and just being able to be a part of it all has just been an absolute blessing to me."
Congratulations to Oliver Huelsman — our newest McDonald's Scholar Athlete of the Week.
