LIMA, OH(WLIO) - School is out, but many kids are taking the opportunity to keep learning this summer.
The Bradfield Community Center and Trinity United Methodist Church are teaming up for the six-week Freedom School program. Kids spend the day doing STEM activities, learning healthy lifestyle habits, and going on several field trips. Local experts also come in to teach the kids life skills like personal finance.
Another major focus of the program is reading. Each day, there is time set aside for everyone in the building to stop what they're doing and read a book.
"This program is also geared on teaching them a love for reading. We don't teach them how to read but we teach them to fall in love with reading because when we read that translates into everything else that we do. It will translate into all their other subject matters," explained the Freedom School executive director, Andrea Guice.
The Bradfield Community Center will also have a similar after-school program available in the fall.
