LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The 2023 Allen County Fair royalty passed the torch to this year's king and queen.
The titles Fair King and Fair Queen are a great honor, but they do come with some responsibilities.
The Fair Kick-Off Dinner was a time to thank supporters, board members, and the community before the fair opens on Friday, August 16th. The candidates in the running for sashes were high school and college students who have long histories in agriculture, including showing animals for years and leadership roles in their FFA or 4-H clubs, and many of them plan to pursue jobs in the ag industry after college. Fair officials say the chosen royalty each year are those who best represent the mission of the county fair.
"It definitely means a lot to me just because I've always pushed for this. First being the Pork Prince in 2021, and then in 2022 being the Pork King. As soon as I had that grasp of just being royalty, being a great role model, and a standpoint of what to really look forward to and what people can become from fair, it's always made me just want to be Fair King," said 2024 Fair King Brody Roof, who begins studying animal science at Ohio State Lima this year with hopes to become a large animal veterinarian.
$750 scholarships were also awarded to 10 students at the dinner.

"It means a lot to me because this is something that I've always wanted because it's someone that you always look up to, and I want to be that person for other people to look up to. I plan to be a positive role model that encourages involvement through the fair and just making people realize how much fun you can have at the Allen County Fair, whether it's on the midway or down in the barns," added Fair Queen Delaney Jones, who will start studying nursing at Rhodes State College this fall.
