Students from across the state are putting their mental power to work to ensure that agricultural equipment has the power to feed America.
Students, staff, and volunteers rolled up their sleeves at Elida High School on Wednesday for their winter blood drive. This was the first year the FFA students at Elida partnered with the Versiti Blood Center of Ohio. School staff, students, as well as community members, came in to help do their part against the national blood shortage. During the cold winter months, blood drives can be vital to the blood supply issue, and every drop counts for those in need. For the students at Elida, helping those in need is what it's all about.
Solvita sponsored the first blood drive of the school year over at Elida High School. This is the first year Solvita has partnered with Elida's Future Farmers of America (FFA) blood drive. The drive was open to students and the public and had over 40 people registered. There were snacks and free Texas Roadhouse peanuts and rolls on hand for anyone who donated.

It was the culmination of FFA week and students raised money for which principal would kiss a cow. The honor went to Lima Senior High Principal Fran Mort. She gave the 4-day old male Holstein a kiss right between the eyes. She was happy to oblige in support of a good cause. It was also dress like a farmer day today. The Agriculture Education Program is one of a dozen Career Technical Education programs offered through the Lima City Schools.
For National FFA Week, students in the program at Lima Senior High School have been engaging in activities and educating their peers on agriculture. On Thursday, they visited preschoolers at Unity Elementary to read them the classic children's book, Jack and the Beanstalk. The youngsters then learned the fundamentals of growing their own beans. The Vice President of the Lima Senior FFA chapter, Zachary Zwiebel, says it's important to educate early on about the value of agriculture.
Spencerville's annual Summerfest celebration kicked off Thursday evening with plenty of things to do on Main St. Thursday's big event was the Kiddie Tractor Pull at the fire station, where young children could test their weight and see if they could pull their weight the farthest. The Spencerville FFA students volunteer to run the event each year to give back to the community that supports them.
There is a lot more to agriculture than farming, and some Putnam County students learned more about the careers that the industry has to offer. In celebration of Future Farmers of America week, Leipsic FFA hosted an Ag career day at the school Thursday. The goal of the event was to show students the jobs and apprenticeship programs that could be available for them in agriculture after they graduate.
