Allen County Public Schools Receive Report Cards from the State of Ohio

The Ohio Department of Education has released its latest report cards on how districts performed last school year.

The state report card includes rankings for overall student achievement and annual progress as well as a number of other categories.

Shawnee Local Schools received a grade of “A” for the number of students passing the state tests.

Even with the high grade in that category, superintendent Mike Lamb doesn’t think the report card is a fair indicator of student achievement.

“Well, we got an ‘A’ in one area, but there are other areas where we could do much better. But again that would be assuming that this measurement was accurate. The whole system is flawed...just plain and simple it’s flawed. In fact we know it’s going to change next year and just like this year they eliminated the Park Test, well that’s what many of these results are based on are Park Test scores. Those have been thrown out.“said Lamb.

Lima City Schools received a grade of “F” for the number of students passing the state tests but did receive better grades in other categories.

“ What we care about and what we really want to look at and what we do look at is, we take the opportunity to look down at the growth by grade band that we’re making or not making and we have to be able to dissect that by subgroup, so we’ve already done that. We’ve already started diving into that as soon as we got that stuff on Monday so that we’re able to say OK at South in grades 4 through 8 they were able to make great growth an received an ‘A’“said Superintendent Jill Ackerman.

Ackerman acknowledges there’s much to do to raise scores and they’re working on a plan to bring those scores up.

“We are working hard all of the time. I think a lot of people know that. We are not going to stop. We are not going to make excuses. We are going to continue to work. We are in the process of developing curriculum guides. We’ve got a lot going on this year that I think will help us, but at the end of the day we need to move that performance indicator needle and that is what the state is going to be looking at.“ said Ackerman.

Grades for other Allen County Public Schools included Bluffton, Delphos, Elida and Spencerville, all scoring “A’s”.

Bath Local Schools made a grade of “B”.

Allen East scored a “D” and Perry Local Schools were given an “F” for the number of students passing the state tests.
