Allen County sales tax increase on the May ballot

Allen County Commissioners passing legislation to put a sales tax increase on the May ballot.

They're asking voters to pass a .2 of a percent additional sales tax. This will be the first time that there will be a specified funding source for a capital needs account in the county. The ballot language is binding that the money collected can only be used for permanent improvement needs. The current sales tax in Allen County is at 6.75%, with the county only getting 1% of that for general revenue. The state keeps the other 5.75%.

Commissioners say they have looked long and hard at the numbers and this is the only option they have to fund the needed capital improvements. If you break the numbers down, the increase would be 2 cents on a $10 purchase.

Voters will be heading to the polls on May 8, 2018.
