ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - Winter is almost here, and many of us in the Lima area are rushing to complete lawn and garden care before frost sets in, but there are some tips to know before you start.
The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District is advising residents to be mindful of the amount of fertilizer they are using on their lawns.
Fall yard work can include planting bulbs, aerating your lawn, mulching, and last-minute fertilizing. The Allen Soil and Water Conservation District is advising residents to be mindful of the amount of fertilizer they are using on their lawns. The Allen Soil and Water District administrator, Casey Heilman, advises homeowners to get their soil tested for helpful information about their lawn and how over-fertilizing can be harmful to your yard and the surrounding environment.
"When we over-fertilize, not only could we be killing our grass, which completely defeats the purpose of putting fertilizer onto our lawn. When it rains, any of that fertilizer, nutrients, or anything that the soil or the plants haven't absorbed is washed away by stormwater runoff, and it's carried into our rivers and streams and affects our drinking water ultimately," said Casey Heilman, Allen Soil and Water Conservation District administrator.

Heilman adds that residents tend to over-fertilize their lawns 8 times more than farmers fertilize their crops and fields. To get more information about getting a soil test for your yard, you can contact the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District at 419-222-0846.
