LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — When you think about judging at the Allen County Fair, creativity is not a category that comes up often, unless it involves dressing up animals.
There was a cast of characters in the Schmidthorst Pavilion Thursday morning. The Mandalorian and Grogu, Little Bo Peep and her big old sheep, and employees at the restaurant Sub-Hay all walked the arena for the annual costume contest.
Around 20 participants in the Junior Fair's horse and pony program thought outside the box for their costumes.
Ryan and Nelly Bells took home the championship banner after dressing up like hobos.
“Well, we started thinking of the idea in a week or two and then we did the idea 3 days before,” says Ryan Davis, who got first place in the costume competition.
Trey and Tarzan got second place, and they didn't have to look far for inspiration for their costume.
“My mom got inspired by seeing my toothbrush and a toothpaste on the counter. So, we so I am to I am basically the toothbrush. Tarzan my horse is the toothpaste and my mom is the evil cavity ,” says Trey Erughan, who got 2nd place in the costume competition.
This is Kinze Burkholder's first year competing at the fair, and dressing her horse up like Jessie and Buzz Lightyear helped cap off a good week of competition.
“I've gotten a lot of placings this week and I'm just proud of myself getting this far in the summer.,” says Kinze Burkholder, first year showing at the Allen County Fair.
Horses are not the only animals that get their costume contest. Allen County Junior Fair participants can have fun dressing up everything from chickens to llamas and alpacas.
