Apollo students practice Phlebotomy skills on friends and family

SHAWNEE TWP., Ohio (WLIO) — Apollo Career Center students received a helping hand — and arm — from their friends and family on Tuesday.

Senior Health Science students were given the opportunity to practice the phlebotomy skills they have been learning throughout the semester on loved ones who volunteered. Friends and family not only offered live practice but also got to see how far the students have progressed in their training.

Because graduation day is approaching, the experience reflects the growing demand in the health care industry.

“This is a very high in demand career. A lot of our industry representatives really advocated for this particular skill set to be taught at high school level. So, with the phlebotomy skill set, they can use it as a standalone profession or use it for nursing or radiology technician or veterinarian assistant or medical assistant. So, this is a very great skill to have in their toolbox, especially when they advance their career in healthcare,” says Jessica Sanders, Apollo Health Science Instructor.

When they graduate, students will earn their credentials in phlebotomy and will be able to apply for jobs immediately.
