LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio State Lima participated in the university’s “Out of the Darkness Campus Walk” to raise awareness about suicide prevention efforts.
The campus walk also raises funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. On Thursday evening, students, staff and faculty laced up their tennis shoes and walked around the quad on campus, symbolizing their support for anyone struggling with mental health and suicidal ideation. Before the walk, various community mental health resources were also on hand, all to normalize discussion about mental health and break stigma.
"There's still a lot of stigma around mental health, and a lot of us deal with some version of mental health, whether it's depression or anxiety, any number of things. There are lots of resources and ways to get help, but sometimes, we're afraid. And so, by doing events like this that are very public with lots of people, it makes it okay to talk about," says Dr. Samantha Haudenschield, Coordinator for Counseling Services, Ohio State Lima.
This is the university’s seventh year for the walk, with Ohio State Lima participating for three years.
