LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Winter’s snowy and icy grip appears here to stay, and that means it’s time to make sure our four-legged friends are safe during the cold season.
For outdoor pets, the Allen County Dog Warden says only a small house is needed, as a smaller space will retain body heat better. For bedding, make sure it is dry and use straw, because cedar or pine chips, along with blankets, can hold water and turn to ice. Don’t forget to check outdoor water dishes since the water will freeze.
For indoor pets, limit their time outside since their delicate paws can build up snow and ice, causing health problems. Dogs with pointy ears are more susceptible to frostbite as well. A big question each winter is what to do if you see a pet chained up outside, and Dog Warden Julie Shellhammer has some insight for that scenario within Lima city limits.
"They are allowed to have dogs outside, but the city has ordinances where they can have them out for certain periods of time, certain lengths of time, during certain months. They can jump online to the Lima City's website, Lima Police Department website- either one of those, and they can check out what the city ordinances are for Lima. The complaints will have to go to the local police department or the humane society humane agent," says Julie Shellhammer, Allen County Dog Warden.
If you suspect your pet is too cold, wrap them in a warm towel or use a heating pad set on a very low setting.
