LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Arctic temperatures can pose a serious risk to water pipes in homes, increasing the chances of frozen or burst lines. Utility officials say taking simple precautions can help homeowners avoid costly damage.

One of the most effective ways to prevent pipes from freezing is to allow a small stream of water to run through faucets. Officials recommend a flow no larger than the width of a pencil lead.

Lima Utilities Director Mike Caprella say this small step can prevent much larger problems if pipes freeze and burst during prolonged cold weather.

“And it doesn't have to be a lot. A lot of people say, Oh, I got all that water. Oh, it's going to cost me money. Now, what cost you money is that that line breaks and you have a mess that that that's that's a problem.”

Caprella also warns residents never to use an open flame to thaw frozen pipes, as it can be extremely dangerous and cause fires. Instead, he recommends using a hair dryer, which can safely thaw a frozen line in most cases.

Utility officials encourage residents to take preventive measures early, as burst pipes can lead to water damage, costly repairs and service disruptions.
