LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Faith and community are at the forefront of activities for local students as they celebrate Catholic Schools Week. St. Charles Catholic School kicked off the week with an assembly that emphasized the strong connection between faith, education, and service to the Lima area.

Mayor Sharetta Smith joined the students to wish them a great Catholic Schools Week and to speak about the importance of education. She encouraged students to see education not only as a tool for personal growth but also as a means to benefit their community.

“Education is a lifelong activity, and when they invest in learning, it helps them become critical thinkers and contribute more to the community,” Mayor Smith said. “I also talked about how education is the great equalizer. It has often been a tool to help individuals rise out of poverty.”

Throughout the week, activities focused on celebrating the value of faith-based education, recognizing service to the country, honoring parents, and looking ahead to students’ future careers.

“I hope they see that our school is here for the community,” said Megan Scheid of St. Charles Catholic School. “Community is a large part of what we teach our children—to give back with their time, their talent, and their treasures.”

Junior high students demonstrated the importance of giving back by donating to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Humane Society of Allen County, and Heartbeat of Lima. The students raised $500 through a cookie walk they hosted in December.
