LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A house fire in Lima last weekend is prompting a warning about the potential dangers of space heaters in the home.
Lima fire officials are reminding residents to make sure heaters are certified by Underwriters Laboratories, noting that a sticker indicating certification should be visible on the back of the device. They also advise checking all cords for damage and keeping heaters at least three feet away from anything flammable, such as curtains, blankets or clothing.
Officials say too many people are attempting to heat their entire homes with portable heaters, which can lead to major safety concerns.
“Space heaters are not a good source of heat for the entire home. They can easily overload the house's electrical capacity. Many people are in the unfortunate situation of using space heaters as their primary heating source, but it's very dangerous,” says Warren Pughsley, Fire Inspector, Lima Fire Department.
Pughsley noted that the theme for the 2025 Fire Safety Week focused on the various chargers used for electronic devices and the fire risks associated with lithium batteries. He said that training proved useful in Lima soon after.
“Shortly after fire safety week, they had a fire in town caused by an e-bike charger. He says more and more of those are being purchased for Christmas this year, increasing the risk of fires. The key is to use the charger that comes with the device and not a cheaper one just because it fits,” adds Pughsley.
He also reminds residents to ensure heating sources such as fireplaces are inspected annually and chimneys are cleaned to prevent potential hazards.
