DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) - The role of a medical assistant is certainly not a boring one. Samantha Modica, who is a certified medical assistant for Delphos Urgent Care through Mercy Health, says that she and the other medical assistants have a multitude of responsibilities as they help patients, including administering vaccines, fulfilling orders for providers, and giving patients their testing results, among other things.

Modica says that there are ways that you can learn as you go while learning to become a medical assistant.

Growing STEM: Medical Assistants provide crucial work for day-to-day medical visits

Samantha Modica, who is a certified medical assistant for Delphos Urgent Care through Mercy Health, says that she and the other medical assistants have a multitude of responsibilities as they help patients.

"When I got my medical assisting degree 10 years ago, I actually went through a two-year Associate's program through UNOH," said Modica. "Now, it's actually a lot simpler than that; St. Rita's actually offers a training program within their guild where you can train as you work and get your medical assisting 100% paid for through St Rita's. In that program, there's a lot of hands-on interaction, and there's a lot of people that do better with hands-on and actually seeing it and then doing it as a learning experience."

Modica adds that a steady schedule and working one-on-one with patients were driving forces behind why she chose to become an MA.

"It was an easy program at the time for me to figure out what worked with my lifestyle and that I could get the patient interaction," said Modica. "It helps with the scheduling and everything works with my home life. It's very predictable scheduling, like nine to five kind of thing, or like seven to four and no weekends, so that's why I kind of went into it. I also get a lot of patient interaction, and it helps me stay close to the community as well. It's very nice to be connected to the community. Being on that one-on-one interaction, especially with family medicine, you get to see those patients over and over again and build a rapport with them."
