LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Mercy Health St. Rita's has many different areas of specialties that patients can receive treatment for, and one of those areas is urology.
Dr. Omar Khan is a urologist at St. Rita's. He works with patients that are dealing with certain kinds of cancer like bladder, kidney, and prostate cancer, or more benign ailments like kidney stones. He says that he was drawn to the medical field as he grew up in a household with medical professionals.
"I grew up with parents that were both physicians," said Dr. Khan. "My mom didn't practice, but in our household, medicine was was part of our lifestyle, so it was something that I was exposed to at an early age."
Dr. Khan says that he sees patients from around the area, not just in Lima Allen County, but from surrounding communities. He says that he is thankful he can make an impact on many people's lives.
"One of the things I like about St. Rita's is it's a large hospital in a smaller town, and there's a lot of surrounding communities that are underserved," said Dr. Khan. "I think the blessing of working in this hospital is you can touch more lives than you would in a positive fashion working in some other locations."
He adds that medicine is a field where someone training to become a doctor, nurse, or other medical professional can learn the most from the experiences of those who came before them.
"If medicine is something that you want to get into, I think you really have to kind of build off the backs of of your mentors in order to kind of get the exposure and and that's what I got at an early age," said Dr. Khan. "I think that's something that anyone in medicine should try to do, pay it forward and see if you can mentor somebody else."
