LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Allen County Regional Planning Commission is responsible for much more than planning future development, a message shared with members of the Lima Kiwanis Club during a recent presentation.
Megan Kinnear, public outreach coordinator for the Allen County Regional Planning Commission, explained that the agency's work is divided into three primary areas, with two focused on transportation and one centered on land use planning.
The commission oversees land use responsibilities that include floodplain regulations, subdivision regulations and metropolitan planning. It also provides transportation planning services for Lima, Allen County and seven additional counties across the region through contracted agreements.
One of the commission's transportation responsibilities is collecting and analyzing traffic crash data to identify roadway safety concerns and help prioritize future improvements.
"So if you have an intersection or roadway that is prevalent to a lot of crashes, then we're gonna take a look at that and see if there are improvements that we can make, engineering kind of improvements. Now our office doesn't do those improvements, but we make those recommendations to the engineers. We can help pull down funding and things like that," said Megan Kinnear, public outreach coordinator for the Allen County Regional Planning Commission.
Kinnear also discussed transportation services available through regional transportation programs for residents who may need alternatives to driving, helping connect individuals with transportation options as their needs change.
