COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — The Ohio Ballot Board has approved the language for a statewide ballot issue that asks voters whether to add Ohio's photo identification requirement for voting to the state constitution.
State Issue 3 will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot. The proposed constitutional amendment would require voters to present a photo ID, such as a driver's license, passport, state identification card or military ID, to receive a ballot. Ohio has required photo identification for voting under state law since 2023.
A "yes" vote would add the photo ID requirement to the Ohio Constitution. A "no" vote would leave the requirement in state law but would not make it part of the constitution.
All Democrats in the Ohio House and Senate voted against placing the constitutional amendment on the ballot, arguing that the measure is unnecessary because the photo ID requirement is already state law.
Supporters of the amendment say adding the requirement to the Ohio Constitution would make it more difficult to repeal.
